2021 marks our fourth Clean Water Training so far! These trainings have two major parts: classroom teaching and practical hands-on experience. In the classroom setting, we use videos and flashcards to teach about harmful bacteria and how to protect against them.
In the rural regions, many don’t have the capability or understanding to properly filter their drinking water. The best some villagers can do is use a muslin cloth to strain the water into another container. Education on the cause of many sicknesses, some of them deadly, that villagers in India face; on health and hygiene best practices; and the proper way to construct BioSand water filters (98% effective against bacteria and pathogens) goes a long way toward preventing avoidable diseases.
As a part of the training, we teach fundamental business practices to help local groups start-up businesses building BioSand filters and become self-sustaining. This provides the villagers with an extra means of supporting themselves while, at the same time, they help bring clean water to neighboring communities. In 2019, we helped start four businesses throughout rural India. Due to Covid we were unable to continue with our training as planned in 2020, but thanks to your support and Rotary’s, we are moving forward with the 2021 training. There is a possibility we might be able to have two trainings this year, potentially doubling our impact in 2021.
