Kamal was born into the Pasi community in North India, a marginalized group traditionally known for pig-rearing and struggling with poverty and low literacy. Like many from his background, his family’s livelihood came from raising and selling pigs. Education was rare, but by God’s grace, Kamal came into contact with Christians who encouraged him to pursue his studies. Against all odds, he became the first person in his entire village to complete a master’s degree — a remarkable achievement.
In 2002, Kamal boldly decided to follow Jesus. That decision came at a heavy cost. Led by the village head, his neighbors turned against him; accusing him of abandoning the faith of their forefathers for “foreign gods.” Kamal and his wife were brutally beaten in public, while their children were at school. The violence and hostility forced him to leave his village. He sought refuge in a nearby Muslim-majority town, renting a small home where no one from his community could easily recognize or target him. There, he quietly built a fellowship, meeting people, praying with them, and sharing the hope of Jesus.
Serving the Marginalized Through Education
In 2021, Global Helps Network recognized Kamal’s gift for serving the vulnerable. He was taken on as a coach for underprivileged, school-dropout children. Reaching his own community and beyond. E ducation among rural villages, especially in marginalized communities, is painfully low. Most children do not even complete basic schooling, and dropout rates are alarmingly high. Kamal is changing that story.
He gathers children who are at risk of dropping out and tutors them according to their school syllabus so they can:
- Pass their current exams
- Learn to study
- Move to the next grade
- Gain confidence and skill to complete their education.
Through his efforts, dozens of children who once stood on the brink of illiteracy have been given a second chance at education and dignity. At the same time, Kamal continued to shepherd his small fellowship, faithfully sharing God’s Word despite risks.
Arrest and Imprisonment for the Gospel
In May 2025, persecution struck again. At 2 a.m., the police stormed Kamal’s home. They came with another pastor, who had been arrested just hours before for preaching the gospel. Under police pressure, that pastor was forced to identify Kamal. The officers searched Kamal’s entire home but found no evidence against him — so they seized his Bible, holding it up as “proof” of his so-called crime. Kamal was then dragged from his house and arrested.
For the next four days, Kamal was kept in police custody. He was beaten, verbally abused, denied food and water, and pressured to renounce Christ. His tormentors demanded that he return to his old faith. Kamal’s answer was firm and unshaken: “I will die, but I will not deny Jesus.”
After days of torture, he was finally presented before the district court. Instead of setting him free, the judge ordered him to be sent to prison. Kamal was confined there for 45 long days under false charges of “converting people.” Even inside the prison, he boldly continued preaching the gospel to fellow prisoners and praying for them, turning his suffering into an opportunity for witness.
But what of the children? Gudiya, Kamal’s college student daughter, has courageously taken up her father’s work. She is tutoring the underprivileged children; continuing to provide hope and continuity to their educational paths.
After 45 days, Kamal was eventually released on bail. But the case against him continues, and he must still appear before the court, facing the ongoing threat of further imprisonment.
